why did the Government suddenly step in and stop all further compulsory evacuation? Why are they allowing so many women still to remain in the Colony? and why are they constantly allowing more women to come in? How can any plea of Military necessity he justified when about 950 women and 400 children of Pitish birth still remain in the Colony, a very considerable number of European and American women and children and about three-quarters of a million Eurasian and Chinese? under such circumstances the psychological necessity to bring the wives back now far outweighs all possible arguments of Military necessity for keeping them away. We there- fore most earnestly beg Your Lordship to investigate the matter thoroughly and give instructions that the ban on the return of the wives and families is to be lifted and freedom be given to the individuals themselves to decide whether their wives and families should return forthwith or at some later date.
It is contrary to all British standards of justice and the cardinal principles of democracy that a certain section of a Community should be penalised by a decree which to be really effective and equitable should apply to the whole.
We submit the foregoing to Your Lordship with the confidence that you will see that the present grave injustice is ended and that those who wish it can be united once more.
